Azzam Yacht: World’s Longest Superyacht

The restored MegaYachtGuy story of the 180.65-metre Lürssen yacht that combined extraordinary scale with a top speed of more than 30 knots.

Azzam is a 180.65-metre Lürssen superyacht delivered in 2013. Her name means “resolute” or “determined” in Arabic, and her brief was unusually demanding: create an exceptionally large yacht that could still travel at high speed in warm, relatively shallow waters.

This page restores MegaYachtGuy’s old article URL “World Largest Super Yacht interesting facts”, which is still referenced by external websites. The archived article focused on Azzam’s record length, immense power, speed and reported helipad. This new edition preserves those themes while replacing old estimates and rumors with better-supported current information where possible.

The original MegaYachtGuy article

The original page was indexed under the title “World Largest Super Yacht interesting facts”. Contemporary references to that page show that it described Azzam as the world’s longest yacht at roughly 180 metres, highlighted approximately 94,000 horsepower and a speed above 30 knots, and mentioned reports of a helicopter landing area capable of accepting a large helicopter.

Why Azzam became a landmark yacht

When Lürssen delivered Azzam in 2013, she displaced the 162.5-metre Eclipse as the benchmark for yacht length. Lürssen still describes Azzam as its world’s longest-ever bespoke gigayacht, at 180.65 metres. What made the project remarkable was not only size: the yacht was built in less than three years from keel laying to delivery.

A timeless exterior and Empire-inspired interior

The owner’s engineer and principal designer Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi directed the project. The exterior was created by Nauta Design, with a brief centered on a modern but timeless appearance rather than an aggressively futuristic one.

French designer Christophe Leoni conceived the interior in an early-19th-century Empire style. Very little authorized interior photography has ever been made public, which has helped preserve Azzam’s unusually private reputation.

How can a 180-metre yacht exceed 30 knots?

Azzam’s propulsion system combines two diesel engines and two gas turbines driving four waterjets. Lürssen states that the yacht can exceed 30 knots, while published specifications commonly place maximum speed around 31–32 knots.

That combination is exceptional for a full-displacement yacht of this scale. The design brief also called for a relatively shallow draft of about 4.3 metres, allowing operation in waters that would be difficult for many vessels of comparable size.

Who owns Azzam?

Azzam was publicly reported as having been commissioned for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then President of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi. He died in May 2022. Current beneficial ownership is not officially transparent; recent public yacht sources associate Azzam with the Abu Dhabi ruling family and sometimes with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. For accuracy, MegaYachtGuy treats Sheikh Khalifa as the publicly reported commissioning/original owner rather than stating an unverified current individual owner.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan

Public reporting and Guinness World Records identify the late Sheikh Khalifa as the owner for whom Azzam was built. He served as President of the UAE from 2004 until his death in 2022.

Interesting Azzam facts

  • Length: roughly two football pitches end to end, at 180.65 metres.
  • Speed: more than 30 knots — extraordinary for a yacht of this size.
  • Build time: less than three years from keel laying to delivery, according to Lürssen.
  • Power: public sources describe about 94,000 horsepower from the combined gas-turbine and diesel installation.
  • Design: Nauta Design created the exterior; Christophe Leoni handled the interior.
  • Privacy: authorized interior imagery remains extremely limited.
  • Helicopter capability: older reports, including the original MegaYachtGuy article, discussed a large helicopter landing area. Public specifications consistently show a helipad/landing area, but the frequently repeated “9.5-ton helicopter” claim is treated here as a historical report rather than a confirmed builder specification.
